ORCHID

We think of orchids as exotic flowers, the product of hothouses and warm climes, but there are a lot of smaller orchids which grow wild in English fields and hedgerows. All orchids have spots, their very own beauty marks, and folklore tells us that there were orchids growing at the foot of the Cross when Jesus was crucified. His blood dropped on the flowers and they have carried the stain ever since.
As different species have varying blooms of curious shapes, so the Orchid has been named Adder's-tongue, Dead Men's Fingers, Ram's-horns and variously after Mother Goose and her goslings, Giddy-gander and Goosie-gander, on account of the way the flowers are grouped on the stem. Orchids are highly prized and quite unique, as their language implies.

เรามักมองว่ากล้วยไม้เป็นดอกไม้ต่างถิ่น ส่วนมากจะพบกล้วยไม้หลากชนิดในประเทศที่อยู่ในซีกโลกเขตร้อน แต่ก็ยังมีผู้พบกล้วยไม้เล็กๆ เติบโตอย่างอิสระตามท้องทุ่ง ชายป่าและอิงแอบอยู่ริมสวนในอังกฤษ กล้วยไม้จะมีลายบนกลีบดอกเป็นจุดบ้าง เป็นเส้นเล็กๆ บ้าง เป็นลวดลายเอกลักษณ์ของแต่ละชนิดตำนานพื้นบ้านเล่าขานกันว่า มีกล้วยไม้ที่งอกและเติบโตที่ใต้ไม้กางเขนที่พระเยซูคริสต์ถูกตรึง หยาดพระโลหิตของพระเยซูหยดลงต้องกลีบดอกและกลายเป็นลวดลายเฉพาะของกล้วยไม้นับแต่นั้นมา
