The Camellia is named after George Joseph Camellus, a Jesuit from Moravia. They are native to India, China and Japan where he travelled, and the flowers are often depicted in Oriental Art.
They were featured in Alexander Dumas' book The Lady of the Camellias where the heroine conveyed her feelings to her suitors by wearing red or white camellias.
