LILAC
The Lilac is a member of the olive family but it used to be known as Blue-pipe in allusion to the hollow stems which were used for pipes. The name comes from the Greek word "syringa" meaning tube and it is probable that the plant originated in Greece or Southern Europe. But it has become a great favourite in England and has been widely planted here since the time of HenryVIII.
Country people call it May Flower and Lily-oak and many are superstitious about bringing it indoors, particularly the white variety whose meaning is Youthful Innocence.
Like many white flowers it is also associated with death and indeed it refuses to bloom if another lilac is cut down in the garden. It is curious that in the Language of Flowers the Lilac should symbolise such pure sentiments for in some villagers a lilac branch is said to signify a broken engagement.

ไลแลค อยู่ในตระกูลเดียวกับมะกอก ต้นกำเนิดของไลแลคอาจจะมาจากประเทศกรีซ แต่ต่อมาได้รับความนิยมมากในอังกฤษ และมีการปลูกไลแลคอย่างแพร่หลายตั้งแต่รัชสมัยพระเจ้าเฮนรี่ที่ 8 ชาวชนบทเรียกไลแลคว่า เมย์ฟลาวเวอร์ และ ลิลี่ โอ๊ค คนส่วนใหญ่เชื่อถือเรื่องโชคลาง จะระมัดระวังไม่นำไลแลคเข้าบ้าน โดยเฉพาะไลแลคขาว ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า ความอ่อนเยาว์ไร้เดียงสา
บางคนมีความเชื่อว่า ไลแลคขาว มีความหมายเกี่ยวข้องกับความตาย และหากมีไลแลคต้นใดถูกตัดทิ้ง ไลแลคขาวในสวนเดียวกันนั้นก็จะไม่บาน

White May is flowering,
Red May beside;
Laburnum is showering
Gold far and wide;
But I sing of Lilac,
The dearly-loved Lilac,
Lilac, in Maytime
A joy and a pride!
I love her so much
That I never can tell
If she's sweeter to look at,
Or sweeter to smell.
