แดนดิเลียน

แดนดิเลียน เป็นต้นไม้เล็กๆ ที่ขึ้นอยู่ทั่วไปในสวน ริมทางหรือในป่าละเมาะ ส่วนมากจะขึ้เองโดยไม่มีใครปลูก ดอกแดนดิเลียนสีเหลืองสวยงาม ขึ้นง่าย และออกดอกตลอดทั้งปีในทุกสภาพดินจนบางครั้งชาวไร่ชาวสวนมองว่าแดนดิเลียนเป็นวัชพืชไป เมื่อกลีบเหลืองโรย เหลือเป็นพู่กลมๆ สีขาวฟูๆ คือช่อเมล็ดมีปุยนุ่มๆ สีขาวพร้อมจะปลิวและโบยบินไปตามสายลม ชื่อสามัญของแดนดิเลียนมาจากภาษาอารบิก หมายถึงผักสลัด เนื่องจากใบของพืชชนิดนี้ หากเก็บในฤดูใบไม้ผลิ เมื่อนำมารับประทานจะมีรสหวาน นำมาปรุงเป็นสลัดผักสดได้ หรือจะนำมาต้มแบบผักขมก็อร่อยไปอีกแบบ ใบแดนดิเลียนมีวิตามินสูง ตามคติความเชื่อพื้นบ้าน หากนำใบแดนดิเลียนมาชงดื่มทุกๆ เช้าจะทำให้ไม่เป็นโรคปวดตามข้อ (รูมาติสซั่ม)
ส่วนชื่อ "แดนดิเลียน" มาจากคำภาษาฝรั่งเศสว่า 'dent-de-lion' เพราะใบของแดนดิเลียนมีลักษณะหยักๆ คล้ายฟันสิงโต ความหมายของแดนดิเลียน คือ คำพยากรณ์ ซึ่งมีที่มาจากความเชื่อที่ว่า หากเราตั้งความปรารถนาอะรไว้ในใจ ก่อนที่จะเป่าปุยเมล็ดที่เป็นพู่กลมๆ ขาวๆ ของแดนดิเลียนให้ปลิวหมดออกไปภายในครั้งเดียว สิ่งที่ตั้งความหวังไว้ก็จะเป็นความจริง ส่วนอีกความหมายหนึ่งคือ "ความซื่อสัตย์" นั้น อาจจะมีที่มาจากการที่ดอกไม้ชนิดนี้สามารถจะเจริญเติบโต อยู่รอด และแตกหน่อขยายพันธุ์ได้อย่างรวดเร็ว

The Song of the Dandelion Fairy
Here's the Dandelion's rhyme:
See my leaves with tooth-like edges;
Blow my clocks to tell the time;
See me flaunting by the hedges,
In the meadow, in the lane,
Gay and naughty in the garden;
Pull me up – I grow again,
Asking neither leave nor pardon.
Sillies, what are you about
With your spades and hoes of iron?
You can never drive me out

If it were not so common and not so insistent on growing on ground where it is not wanted, the Dandelion would be considered a handsome flower. However, it grows plentifully throughout the year on all types of soil so farmers consider it a troublesome weed. Yet the generic name comes from the Arabic meaning salad vegetable, for the leaves are sweet when gathered in the spring and may be eaten raw in salad or boiled like spinach. They contain high amounts of vitamins and folklore maintains that if you drink a cup of Dandelion tea each morning you will never have rheumatism.
The name Dandelion comes from the French dent-de-lion, for the jagged leaves resemble the teeth of a lion; this name or its equivalent may be found in nearly all the European languages. The meaning of Dandelion in The Language of Flowers is Oracle, originating from the superstition that if you blow off all the seeds on the seedhead in one breath, your wish will come true. The alternative meaning is Faithfulness and may have arisen from the plant's ability to survive and reproduce quickly.
